Mrs Abera is an Ethiopian football player — the forward played for Birkirkara F.C on the island of Malta and represents the National team as well.

Having recently won her 2nd Malta Football Player Association Award in 2020 as the best female player of the year; I reached out to her for a quick Q&A to see where her mind is.

At 22, her stats are incredible : 30 goals in 12 games.

Ethiopia is mostly known for its long distance runners and this time, it is nice to meet one who does not fit the mould.

Her life story resembles in a way like many of us — a girl who started playing young and mostly with boys. Her background added to her mental strength as she had to overcome many obstacles in a country where not much is given. But her success is also a testimony of her resilience and how her faith has helped her.

Recently married and having spent her lockdown time back home, Mrs Abera is definitely having a good year.

Hi Loza, how are you?

Thank God, I am doing well. My wedding was beautiful and full of joy and for that I am grateful.

Can you tell us about yourself? Where are you from?

I was born and grew up in the southern region of Ethiopia, a place called Duram around Kembata.

You recently won the MFPA, how does it feel and what does it represent?

I am grateful with my reward by God’s grace. This reward helps me stay motivated and to keep on working hard.

How was it playing football back in Ethiopia?

It has been great as it is easy to spot skilled footballers, men and women alike, in various places.

Ethiopia has a population of 109 million.

What are your expectations for this new season? Do you plan to join a new club in France, England or Spain?

My mission is to keep working hard but I am also aiming to play in other leagues with better conditions.

How do you see the state of women in football now compared to when you started playing professionally?

The conditions are still pretty low; we have many battles to fight for!

What can we wish you for this upcoming season?

Success in every area of my life.

What advice can you give to women who wish to join a club in Europe or abroad?

Women (our sisters) footballers don’t have to be afraid to go out and play. They need to fight without giving up and when one finds an agent to be careful and very wise before taking a decision — because it will affect your life.

Thank you and wishing you the best.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share.

After her contract came to an end with the Maltese team, she is now eyeing for new opportunities in Europe after having shined in Sweden and Malta.
